I am trying to use the Buy One Get One offer for a product. When you purchase 5 boxes of Product A you will get 1 box of Product A for free. I have Product A to be purchased and Product A to be discounted 100%. I set the quantity to 5 and automatically add the discounted item to the cart. Our thought is that it should only discount 1 box of Product A. Instead it is cutting the selling in half of all boxes.
Should Be:
Product A - Price $400 - Quantity 6 - Total $2000
What Its Doing:
Product A - Price $400 - Quantity 6 - Total $1000
How should we treat BOGO's of the same product with a quantity restriction?

We looked into this and it turns out that it's not actually a bug but a misunderstanding of how the offer works. Also, we weren't able to reproduce the math in your example.
The confusion arises with the meaning of the quantity field. When you specify a quantity of 5, this means that the offer will only apply to line items with a quantity of at least 5. It does not mean "buy five get one." Instead, every other item is free. So, if there are 5 items, 2 of those 5 are free (and if you added a sixth item it would be free).
Remember, the offer is called "Buy One Get One". |

So how would we do offers that have a quantity restriction? I find most of our offers are always never simply Buy One Get One, rather Buy Quantity Get Quantity. You have to buy a quantity of an item to get another quantity of an item, whether it is the same item or different item.
I know pre 2013 we did this all the time and it did work with quantity.

I know pre 2013 we did this all the time and it did work with quantity. Nothing changed in the standard codebase between 5.8 and 2013 for this offer. Your site had customizations to this offer so it's possible that they lost during the upgrade (there were no comments in the code that indicated there was a functional change other than a bug fix). Also, your site has a custom offer called Buy Any Get One which uses the same offer processor as the Buy One Get One offer. |

Yes we did need to customize the offer a little bit because after sp5.5 I believe, the add to cart automatically feature had been removed. I also remember a long time back that Marcus originally intended the BOGO to be only for Buy A Get B free, not Buy A Get A Free. I also remember even longer back, if you added multiple "Products which have to be purchased" to the offer, each one of those products had to be purchased to get the discount product. That's why we had the Buy Any Get One offer created, so you could purchase any of the products to receive the discount. I'm assuming by the 2013 demo, it looks like the BOGO now allows any of the products to be purchased, rather than all of them to receive the discount. So that brings back what needs to be done for quantity restricted offers, like Buy 5 get 1 discounted, or buy 5 get 3 discounted. A perfect example would be like at grocery store, buy 2 boxes of cereal, get the 3rd box discounted, or buy 5 boxes of cereal get 2 discounted.
