Does anyone have a mobile commerce template or add-on?

Or is anyone interested in cooperating to have one developed for BVC 5?

I'm curious to see if anyone has gone the mobile route with BV 5. Off the top of my head I would think that if you needed to support anything less capable than the iPhone or Android platforms, this would need to be a completely new website, perhaps integrating via BV's web services.

You say "Web Services" - I think that I know about the one for the import/export tool - Are there more?

I really need an interface between an existing "order entry / inventory control" system and the web site inventory.

The import/export tool uses BV's web services to transfer data. Do some Googling on .NET Web Services and you should find plenty of info to get you started. There are several web service URL's for BV:

/WebServices3.asmx
/WebServices4.asmx
/WebServices4a.asmx

We've been working on a mobile add-on for BV internally. Here's one of our mock ups.

The thing that I find interesting is the interpretation of 'mobile'. That mockup looks nice, but it requires a phone like an iPhone, Blackberry, Android, or Blackberry to function. I'm guessing that's fine, since users with simple phone probably aren't shopping from their phones.

Although the mockup looks like an iPhone we are targeting iPhone, Android and Win Mobile 7 devices. They all have similar capabilities and screen sizes.

Based on the success of those devices we will consider other phone platforms. I worked with a guy a Fry who targeted mobile from 1999 to 2002 and eventually went to Nokia. Let's just say that targeting non-smart phones is a nightmare.

We have not determined exactly how the mobile software will be packaged and sold yet. Most likely will be included with BV 6 updates but we'd like to find a way to make it available for BV 5 too.

Here's a screenshot from the work in progress. You'll notice that the picture is running on the Safari browser on a desktop machine. The mobile site is just some special CSS and pages so it should be compatible with many different smart phones.

This is good news! iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Win Mobile - those are the devices store managers and shoppers (both B2B and end-users/consumer retail) are asking to support.

We definitely need it for BV 5, Marcus!

Thanks,

Here's a pic of the product browse page. It supports paging (not shown in this picture) so that you won't have an issue with larger categories. I wouldn't recommend more than 100 to 200 products per category if you can help it though.

may sound odd, is there an option to limit the character display of the short description for the mobile display?

This may be considered a unique request, the quick explanation is that I've eliminated the 255 character limit on the short description field as it is used for alternative purposes that benefit from no character limit however maintains it's usefulness for the mobile display.

If you are up to the additional work there is always the option of adding 'Mobile Description'
I do this now with product feeds adding 'Feed Description'
Added work but it pays off for tailored content.

If the option for a short description limit isn't in the OOTB cards, I've never balked at the thought of additional work to accomplish exactly what I need :)

Come to think of it, I might consider a "Mobile Short Description" and "Mobile Long Description" since I have some seriously HTML heavy long descriptions that I can't expect any automated feature to correctly remove. (some jquery stuff in there, styling, etc..)

I use the short description field for product feeds, which is why I eliminated the character limit. Not feeding a novel length description...lol.. just needed the limit removed in most cases.

1) You can always modify the pages of the mobile add-on to do your bidding. You'll get the source just like with BV

2) Safari (iPhone browser) and other web-kit browsers (like Chrome on Android) support text limits with ellipsis, etc. using special CSS tags. You can define a max length in your style sheet.
