You edit a customer under People->Customers and select the price group.

Affiliates and price groups are not related in any way out of the box.

That isn't a built in feature of the software. You would need to custom code that feature.

Did this feature ever become a reality? Can I create a discount for those an affiliate refers? It seems only natural to provide an incentive for the one referred, say a 5% discount, as well as for the Affiliate. This will better equip the Affiliate to promote the link.

Where can I find out more info about how to use the affiliate program?

No. One problem with this is that a user must have an account before they can have a Price Group. I think there are better ways to achieve what you want to do (more on that below).

The affiliate program is pretty simple. You'll first want to configure your affiliate program on the Options >> Site Settings >> Affiliates page. Note that you can override these default settings per affiliate by editing a specific affiliate (People >> Affiliates >> Edit). Next you'll want to put a link to the affiliate signup page (/AffiliateSignup.aspx). You can edit the copy on this page by going to Content >> Policies and editing the three affiliate policies. Once an affiliate signs up their info will appear under People >> Affiliates but their account will not be active until you click the "Enable" text link. Now all they have to do is link to any page of your site using their affiliate query string and that order will be tagged to their account. If you then run the Affiliate Sales report you will see how many sales were generated and what their commission is.

Sure. You could create an offer with a coupon code. Then the affiliate can add the coupon code to their links to your site along with their affiliate ID. In case you don't know, can add "?code=ABC" to a site URL to automatically add the coupon code "ABC".

Great info, Aaron. So a link with an added coupon code might look like http://www.kataaro.com/d...id=AffliliateXYZcode=ABC ? Then would the code automatically apply and the referred customer would not have to enter the code when they check out? That would be sweet.

If that's true, I would think anyone could use the code, if they figured it out, even if they were not following the link. Maybe that's not a major concern.

Almost. You need to add an ampersand (&) between your two query string parameters like this:

?affid=AffliliateXYZ&code=ABC

The order of the query string parameters doesn't matter, so "code" could come before"affid".

Yep! It's like magic. The auto-adding of the coupon code from a query string is one of those cool features that we added in BVC 2013 that most people don't know about. It's a great tool to use with email marketing.

If you really want to get tricky, you can use the "Show/Hide content based on query string" feature of the HTML Content Block to conditionally display messaging to users based on a query string. Again, this works great with email marketing as it allows you to display a sale banner, for example, but only to people that click the link from your email. You could also use it with the affiliate ID to display affiliate-specific messaging.

Right, but the affiliate would not get credit for the sale. Periodically you'll want to change up the coupon code in the event that the code gets passed around.

Great, I can't wait to get this all set up and start the program.

We will be offering Loyalty Points as a reward for Affiliates instead of cash. This way we get another purchase out of the deal, and products/services are cheaper than cash. It would be nice if this could be an automatic feature. Rewarding cash would require the added step of running reports and writing checks. Awarding Loyalty points automatically, and in real time, would be effortless on my part, and more efficient for the Affiliate. What do you think?

This type of loyalty program is pretty atypical because it only works if your affiliates actually want your products. In the traditional affiliate model the affiliate is essentially a commissioned sales person and usually advertises for many companies, so chances are slim that they would actually want your product.

That's where affiliate networks like Commission Junction, ShareASale, etc come in. They automate this process and also give you exposure to affiliates that would otherwise never encounter your business. Lastly, they make it easy for the affiliate to engage your business and advertise your products.

Let's say a customer does have an account with us, and are in our wholesale price group. Is there a way to mute a coupon code from an affiliate link they click for their account, so they don't receive multiple discounts on pricing?

Not without custom development. You would need to modify, or create an alternate version of, the Apply Offers workflow step to exclude Offers when a user belongs to a Price Group.
