For SEO purposes, does having product choices adversely affect this? We currently have items listed separately, however, creating product choices would greatly clean up the site, I just don't want it to have a negative impact on SEO. Please advise.

Choices vs. separate products is the age-old merchandising dilemma. If customers search for the choice product's SKU or name, then separate products will probably work better for SEO. Other factors to consider are if you ever implement any kind of product comparison or filtering functionality; using choices can complicate this. Lastly, shopping comparison sites like Google Shopping require that each choice product be a separate listing; presently the feed engine does not support this, though it is something that we will likely add in a future release.

I only can speak from our experience. We used to have our products all listed separately. Although it was great for customers searching for SKUs, we found that using choices drove up sales since we switched. We no longed list product choices (models options as we use them) as separate products. We also use keywords and meta keywords for all the SKUs so the search will still pull up the product.

SEO wise, we have 1000s of different types of products, so to track SEO for each type would be hard to say yes or no to this question, but we have greatly benefited from choices. It is much easier for our customer's to find what model option they are looking for when it is on one page. For example, lets say we have a category of 30 products. Each product has a minimum of 5 options that have individual SKUs required for purchasing. The category now just became 150 products without using choices. On top of that, for most of our products, customers may want to buy a quantity of each option of the product. So for us and our product types, it makes much more sense using choices. It was a huge undertaking though, because of all the URL redirects. BV 2013 has solved this with the URL re-directer... HUGE HELP!

The google product feed choice add-on is something we are also looking to have developed so those options can be listed.
