I would like to create a very short description for each category (descriptions are too long and meta descriptions may differ from what I want to display) and was thinking of using the keywords box for this. We currently do not utilize the keywords box for anything.

The Keywords property of categories is not currently used. In 2013 you will have a category short description (512 characters, just like the product short description), so I would recommend using this instead.
